That's according to centre fullback Amanda Armstrong of Old Bar.
FMNC took on Merewether in Newcastle last weekend and proved competitive, going down 2-0. Valentine also came away first round losers when beaten by Adamstown 4-0.
Matt Baker has charge of FMNC this season, with the side looking to make up for a disappointing campaign in 2014.
"We had a young team last year and we were short of players, so we struggled a bit,'' Armstrong said.
"We should improve this season.''
While the side has a strong representation of players from northern part of the zone, Armstrong said there are players from the Manning and Great Lakes involved. The squad trains twice a week, Tuesdays in Taree and Thursdays in Port Macquarie.
Armstrong said there were plenty of positives to come out of the opening round.
"But we need to fix our passing game,'' she added.
The competition has been expanded this year to eight sides.
Sunday's game will start at 2pm and will be the culmination of a full day of football beginning with the under 14s at 9am followed by the 16s at 10.30, 18s at noon and first grade.
