From Sunday, March 1, the public will be able to register and report littering from vehicles either directly through the EPA website or through their free mobile app.
Greater Taree City Council mayor Paul Hogan says he hopes the new reporting system will make people think twice before littering.
"The Manning Valley offers some beautiful scenery and amazing tourist drives that navigate through kilometres of coastal trails, unique national parks and 23 townships, and it is a shame when people toss litter out the window," Cr Hogan said.
If the report is validated, and the vehicle description provided in the report matches the vehicle's registration details, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a penalty notice from the State Debt Recovery Office, imposing a fine.
Fines up to $500 will be issued for reports submitted by the community.
Reporters must register the incident within 14 days.
The reporter will have to register their details the first time they submit a report.
To make a report, the member of the public must have the vehicle registration details, vehicle description, location, date and time, and details about the litter.
