Modern square dancing is quite different from the image that many people have of hay bales in the barn, gingham dresses and strictly western music, says promenader Don McElligott.
These days regular dances are held in school and church halls and sometimes licensed clubs with a variety of music and clothing.
There are two clubs in the Manning at present, one in Taree with a caller and another dancing to recorded music in Wingham.
Manning Promenaders Club in Taree dance in the Community of Christ Hall in High Street.
Don says there will still be more to learn after the four week introductory course but this will give a new dancer enough exposure to dancing to know whether they would like to continue this fun pastime.
New dancers from Wingham are welcome to attend and when they have learned enough movements they will be able to dance locally.
Square dancing can be enjoyed by all ages and provides healthy exercise for both body and mind in a friendly and fun atmosphere.
If you can walk comfortably you should be able to dance. You are asked to wear neat casual dress and comfortable low-heeled shoes.
Experienced dancers can dance not only at other clubs and larger events in Australia, but in many countries throughout the world.
If you haven't seen square dancing go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=maGD5jCq-38 for a short video of such a dance in Sweden.
