"Plans are in place to increase the police presence at all Australia Day events in the region to assist organisers to create and maintain a family-orientated atmosphere that is free of anti-social behaviour," Inspector George said.

"Australia Day falls on Monday which means most people will work the following day. We think this will mean people will choose to get out early and go home early from events in the area. However, police will be out early and staying out late to ensure all events are safe and free of anti-social behaviour.

"We ask that people drink responsibly and ensure that they have a Plan B to get home if they drink too much alcohol."

Existing alcohol-free zones in Taree and Wingham will be enforced by police and according to Greater Taree City Council's website they are:

o Taree zone: bounded by Commerce Street, Wynter Street, Stevenson Street and River Street.

o Wingham zone: bounded by Combined Street, Rowley Street, Isabella Street, Wynter Street, Bent Street, Primrose Street and Queen Street.

All of the streets and public car parks within these boundaries are included in the zones, which allow police to seize, tip out or otherwise dispose of alcohol from any person observed drinking within the declared areas.

Manning-Great Lakes Local Area Police Command is also focusing its attention on motorist behaviour with Operation Safe Return.

Operation Safe Return starts at 12.01am today and ends at 11.59pm on Monday and double demerits will be in force throughout the period for speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences.
