The picturesque Cattai Wetlands near Coopernook was once farmland, suffering from the effects of acid sulfate soils, land clearing and weeds. The previous landowner recognised the conservation value of the wetlands and worked earnestly in partnership with Greater Taree City Council to secure its protection, resulting in council purchasing Cattai Wetlands in 2003. With the assistance of government grants, council has been able to undertake the restorative works required to transform the wetlands back to its former glory.
This year's World Wetlands Day celebrations will be held on Sunday February 1 at 7am and include the increasingly popular Breakfast with the Birds. Once again the Harrington Lions Club have volunteered their time to cook a scrumptious barbecue breakfast for the community in the company of the many birds that visit the wetlands each day. More than 170 different species of birds have been sighted at Cattai and it is recognised as an international bird watching spot.
Community members are then welcome to either stay on after breakfast and participate in one of two workshops being run by local experts to provide lots of interesting information on the plants and birds that inhabit the wetlands; or undertake the self-guided walk around the wetland.
The walk around the wetland is about 2kms and with stops along the way normally takes about an hour. Other walks are also available include a 500m walk to the lookout on Spring Hill where on a good day you can see as far south as Cape Hawke at Forster, and all the way to Crowdy Head. Head to www.gtcc.nsw.gov.au and search "Cattai" for information including directions and self guided wetland walk brochure which contains lots of information about the many species of plants and wildlife to be found. Those going should wear sturdy shoes, long pants, sun protection and take water and insect repellent.
For catering purposes an RSVP is required by no later than Wednesday January 28. Contact council's customer service centre on 6592 5399 to book a place. Located just off the Pacific Highway, not far north from the Harrington turn off, Cattai Wetlands is opened to the public four days a week, Friday through to Monday, from 8am to 3pm and every day during the school holidays.
