Trainer Bob Milligan said the mare tends to get nervous and sweats up before her races, but was getting more adept to racing.
Although she has the “ace” barrier, jockey Grant Buckley will have to bide his time early as she races best with a late sprint, that being the case when she wound up late to score by 2.5 lengths in a class 3 race here.
“That’s the way to ride her,” Milligan said to then jockey Glenn Lynch.
Her rivals from Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Coffs Harbour, Gosford, Wyong, Broadmeadow, Cessnock and Hawkesbury all have winning or placed form recently in what should be a great race.
Gosford seven-year-old gelding Senor Montoya, trained by Grant Allard, is a distance specialist with five of its six wins being at 1600m.
The gelding’s last win by a length over 1506m at Port on November 14 was strong as the runner-up, Coffs mare Sofin, franked the form with a win in Sydney next start.
Just behind both of them was Another Charger, trained at Port by Tas Morton, which has run well in Sydney company.
Then there is six-year-old gelding Butane, trained at Kempsey by Barry Ratcliff, which bolted in with a light-weight in the Krambach Cup over 1600m on October 24 before a third in the Kempsey Cup and then a sixth at Canterbury.
Coffs mare Myonrose, trained by Brett Bellamy, won on its home track and Ballina over 1600m before fading for seventh over 1800m at the Gold Coast next start.
The Graft is a last start winner over 1450m at Muswellbrook for Broadmeadow trainer Paul Perry and At Twilight is making the trip from Hawkesbury for trainers Tara and Phillippe Vigouroux after a nose second over 1600m at Scone to add to the puzzle.
Broadmeadow trainer Kris Lees is throwing five-year-old gelding Anuradha into the deep end in having only its third start and graduating to 2000m of the Weddings On The Winning Post Function Handicap after scoring over 1600m here last Monday.
“He (horse) is very dumb but he can gallop,” winning jockey Andrew Gibbons, who again takes the mount, said.
Wyong trainer Allan Denham and Cessnock jockey Robert Thompson could be in for a good day with them combining with three top hopes in Magic Topaze in race two, Respire in race five and Yamba’s Dream in race eight8.
