The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued a number of severe weather warnings over the last couple of days with the chance of severe thunderstorms predicted to continue as two low pressure troughs combine to affect the north east of the state.
The developing weather system and associated severe thunderstorms have the potential to produce heavy rain, damaging winds and large hail for the Mid North Coast over the course of today and Saturday.
NSW SES Mid North Coast Region Controller, Stephen Hart said,” Our key messages to the community are to avoid driving through flash flood water caused by heavy rain, to closely monitor weather warnings and to call the NSW SES on 132500 if emergency assistance is required.”
The NSW SES recommends that on hearing a severe weather or thunderstorm warning residents undertake the following actions:
- Move your car under cover or away from trees
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
- Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water
- Unplug computers and appliances
- Avoid using the phone during the storm
- Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well
“This is a timely reminder that we are now well and truly into the storm season and that residents need to consider how they can minimise the impacts storms have on their property and on the safety of their loved ones,” Mr Hart said.
Information on how residents can prepare for storms can be obtained by visiting the NSW SES website www.stormsafe.com.au .
