FIVE years ago the Salvation Army Moree wrote to service clubs asking for donations of money to make basic hampers for farmers doing it tough in the drought.
A Taree Lions Club member and his Lions lady thought that there should be something in the hamper for the children.
He rang the Sallies and asked if they would like some bags of lollies and they accepted.
Three Lions ladies Margaret Rogers, Angela Bird and Barbara Smith then bagged up 150 bags of lollies for the hampers.
A Taree Salvation Army member was doing mission work handing out the hampers when he looked down and saw Merry Christmas from Taree Lions Club and when he arrived back in Taree he came and told the club.
The man from Moree then moved to Narrabri but Taree Lions Club continues to send bags of lollies, with a Taree Lions member who runs a delivery business arranging to get the parcel out to Narrabri.
This year the club received a lovely thank you letter saying "Your annual gift of lollies never fails to bring a smile, not only to the many children doing it tough but also to their parents, many of whom can barely afford food for the table."
Taree Lions Club now also supplies bags of lollies for the hampers given to the disadvantaged of the Manning Valley.
