The garage rock trio will play this year's Festival of the Sun on December 12-13.
Buoy Oh Buoy are joining a massive line up this year, playing alongside the likes of The Jezabels, Violent Soho and Shihad.
The three best mates mix airy garage guitar with fast beats and driving vocals, reminiscent of early Kings of Leon.
The trio of musos have been playing together in various bands since year seven at Wingham High School, but only under their current moniker since late last year
Drummer Raff Watt said the band couldn't wait to hit the stage at Festival of the Sun.
"We are absolutely thrilled to be performing at Festival of the Sun and would like to thank everyone who supported us to achieve this amazing opportunity," he said.
"We're excited because some of the acts this year, like the Jezabels, have been musical influences for us.
"So to open the festival is a dream come true."
Raff said they came up with the band name Buoy of Buoy after a brainstorming session.
"One of our friends suggested it, and we thought it was cool," he said.
"And it goes with the whole nautical theme and us spending a lot of time on the beach and the coastal lifestyle."
When it came to having a favourite drummer, Raff had a clear choice.
"Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers because he redefined rock playing, branching out from the AC/DC style two 4/4 standard rock beat," he said.
Raff and his bandmates had nothing but praise for the opportunity given to them by Triple J.
"We'd like to show our appreciation to Triple J for giving us this opportunity, and we encourage other local bands to enter Triple J Unearthed," he said
The band count acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Two Door Cinema Club and The Rubens as influences.
Festival of the Sun, which sold out in absolute record speed this year, will be taking place on December 12-13 at Sundowner Breakwall Tourist Park, Port Macquarie.
