Tuesday November 3 was a landmark day for racing in the Manning when Wingham-born jockey Corey Brown steered Shocking to win the Melbourne Cup. He wore the black and gold colours synonymous with his home town when he broke his duck in the race. The previous year Brown was second on Brauer in one of the closest finishes in the cup’s history. It was the first Manning win in the Melbourne Cup since Zulu’s success in 1881. Brown had plenty of support at Taree-Wingham Race Club’s Melbourne Cup day meeting. The crowd was up by 600 patrons from 2008, racing manager Phil Shoesmith reported. Alcohol sales were up 20 per cent on the previous years, although the crowd was well behaved – Mr Shoesmith noting that sales of light beer were 10 times that from 2008.
