Work is in full swing to fix the bridge, which will improve access for residents to and from the Taree CBD.
In particular it will help disabled community members with the use of their modes of transport such as scooters.
Greater Taree City Council worker Phil Williams said work on the bridge should be completed shortly.
"We started two weeks ago. It was dilapidated and in a shocking state," he said.
"It was an old footbridge for residents but in older days it used to be the bridge for the old highway.
"(Today) we're concreting the approach to the bridge, and it should be finished by the end of next week."
Mr Williams said he had already had comments from one community member who couldn't wait for the bridge to be completed.
"One woman who was on a scooter said it was the best thing you've ever done," he said.
Mr Williams said the current work would ensure long term access for residents.
"This will last now for another 30 years," he said.
