Announcing the completion of the works in time for the school holidays, Mrs Williams said parts of the two hectares campground had been raised by almost a metre to avoid campers being stranded by flooding.

"The government is committed to improving utilisation of public assets, such as national parks, through increased visitation," Mrs Williams said.

"Almost $300,000 worth of improvements have been made at Diamond Head Campground to formalise the popular site.

"Coinciding with the school holidays, which start next week, the new works improve drainage, minimise impacts from camping and ensure equitable access to camping sites for everyone," Mrs Williams said.

"The upgraded campground replaces the previous freestyle camping by providing 67 designated campsites, accommodating over 530 campers at any one time.

"This is a significant investment in the local community, providing visitors with improved access to an enjoyable, sustainable and safe beachside camping experience, between the townships of Laurieton and Harrington.

"Much of the effort to improve the site is underground. Since the 1980s the site has dropped by almost 30 centimetres due to compaction," Mrs Williams said.

The resulting basin-like effect meant the campground regularly flooded after heavy rain.

Work to address this problem commenced in May this year. Along with significant underground drainage works, parts of the campground have been raised by up to 900 millimetres to prevent visitors being stranded by localised flooding.

The relocation and realignment of roads has also improved the access to the newly delineated camping sites.

In addition, the carrying capacity of each campsite has been limited to a maximum of eight persons, which not only addresses issues with overcrowding, but also ensures the campgrounds amenities can cope with the capacity, especially during peak times.

The improvements at Diamond Head Campground will provide for a greatly improved camping experience, and set the area up well for the next generations of campers.
