Deputy mayors are elected by councillors for a one-year period, or for the remainder of the current council term.
In Wednesday night's decision, councillors chose to elect Cr West for the one year period, beginning yesterday.
In addition to Cr West, Cr Kathryn Bell also nominated for the position. Once the votes were cast by secret ballot, Cr West was declared elected for the September 2014 - September 2015 period.
"Councillor Jenkins has done a good job over the last year as deputy mayor, and has been a great support to me and the team. I am looking forward to working with Cr West and congratulate him on his appointment," mayor Paul Hogan said.
"It is as always an honour to be in this position," said Dr West.
"We work together as a team, from the mayor and my councillor colleagues, to council staff and the community as a whole.
"It will be all the more important that we stand tall together in facing upcoming issues like local government reform."
