Target’s store manager Glenn Humphrey remarked, “If my staff can do it, then so can I to support such a worthwhile cause”.
Manning Valley Relay For Life’s Team Target is about to have many bald Target staff members when four of them have their heads shaved to raise funds for Cancer Council NSW to provide information and support to cancer patients and their carers, cancer prevention programs, advocacy and research to help find a cure for cancer. At a date to be announced, closer to Relay a further staff member, Steven Hodgson will be saying “ouch” when he has his torso waxed for the cause.
Qualified hairdresser, Teresa Jones will be shaving the heads of all four participants – Alison Burley, Carol Maroney and Megan Griffis West as well as Glenn Humphrey. Each team member has either experienced cancer themselves or has a close family member whom they have lost to cancer.
Team Captain, Kerri Williams knows first hand what it is like to have a cancer diagnosis which occurred at the very young age of 11. When diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma she was told she had only two weeks to live . . . that was 23 years ago. Kerri having beaten the odds, has written a book titled ‘Never Goodbye’, detailing the highs and lows of her cancer journey.
Kerri stated, “Cancer is an indiscriminative disease. It doesn’t matter if you are young, old, male, female, have a family or not. It can affect you personally or indirectly, either which undefinably changes you for all of your life. I’m a survivor and I am also an observer of family who has faced this disease and another who is in the very scary beginnings of his. When an opportunity to give back, to show support and to raise awareness in some way comes forth, I jump on it.”
Everyone has been busy fundraising, either baking delicious cakes and slices and selling them at the Target Store, selling raffle tickets for their “entertainers pack for any occasion” and generous $50 voucher from Bruce Lang’s Butchery, 1st prize or 2nd prize - a beautiful crocheted lap blanket created by Mrs. Harvey, the mother-in-law of one of the girls.
“Astonishingly, Megan Griffis West raised $400 at the Nabiac pub after mentioning the head shave,” stated Alison. “We had a conservative goal of $500 and have already exceeded that amount.
