Preschool director Kylee Ball says the preschool will create a series of garden beds to grow fruit and vegetables using a $1338 donation from Quota.

The origin of the butterfly tribute to Quota pays homage to the organisation's symbol, a butterfly, which is unable to hear. It represents Quota's objective to serve deaf, hard-of-hearing, and speech-impaired individuals and disadvantaged women and children.

Kylee says the community of more than 70 families who use the preschool recently held a working bee to establish part of the garden using recycled and re-purposed materials.

"We want to take a more sustainable approach and so we have collected an apple cart, some pallets and are going to build some of our beds out of recycled materials," Kylee explained.

"One of our dads is an ecologist and is collecting materials and will give us advice."

The working bee enabled the preschool to set up the apple cart and two aluminium garden beds. Parents and students worked together to plant out seedlings of beans, zucchinis, peas, cucumbers, onions and sunflowers.

Kylee says the preschool has previously tried to grow fruit and vegetables and "failed miserably".

"We had vegetable gardens up the back and it just didn't work as the soil wasn't any good," Kylee explained.

"So the children have been through a journey of trying and trying and trying and not really being very successful."

The location of the garden beds has changed to the front of the school with a north-facing aspect and is now filled with good quality soil and seedlings.

"We hope to have at least three garden beds, one for each room and the produce will be used in the preschool's education program," Kylee said.

"The garden will be used to teach our children about nutrition, life-cycles and the outdoor environment. We also want to introduce them to Aboriginal culture, traditional bush tucker and we hope to incorporate our families in the learning. We will give away the food we grow so that our children can share it with their families at home.

"It's the continuity of the learning being passed on from the children to their home."

Kylee says the preschool recently used part of the Quota donation to purchase an apple tree.

She says staff will incorporate the garden in the preschool's environment activities.
