Australian National Flag Day celebrates the first time the flag was flown over the dome of the exhibition building in Melbourne in 1901, when Australia’s first Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Sir Edmund Barton, announced the winners of a competition to design a national flag for Australia.
Federal member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie today joined the Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Hon Bronwyn Bishop MP, in encouraging all Australians to fly the flag on this day to remind us of the common pride we have in our nation.
“As Australia’s foremost national symbol it is appropriate that we honour the place and importance of the Australian National Flag.”
“I encourage individuals, community organisations, local authorities, businesses and schools to celebrate Australian National Flag Day by flying or displaying the Australian National Flag on 3 September and regularly throughout the year.”
