South Fremantle's Ben Saunders, who kicked four goals against Swan Disticts on Saturday, currently leads Subiaco's Matthew Boland by two goals.

Boland was left on 47 goals after being kept to just one behind by Claremont on Saturday.

Swan Districts pair Ricky Cary (42) and Tim Geappen (38) are still close enough, although they only have one game remaining before finals (against East Fremantle), with a bye scheduled for round round 23.

Saunders has kicked 49 goals in 17 games this season including hauls of seven against West Perth in round 5 and six against East Fremantle in round 16.

He already has one Bernie Naylor Medal around his neck, having claimed the honour in 2012 when he kicked 66 goals from 20 games. South Fremantle failed to make the finals that season also.

The Lions last produced the competition's leading goal-scorer in 2011 when Blake Broadhurst booted 68 goals. In fact, with Brad Smith claiming four Bernie Naylor medallists, Subiaco has won this honour in six of the past 11 years.

This is Boland's first season in the WAFL and he has been extremely consistent, kicking three goals or more in 10 of his 17 games.

Meanwhile, Claremont remains a slim chance of knocking East Fremantle out of the top four and playing finals.

The Tigers have won six of their past seven games and are two wins behind the Sharks, with two rounds to go - plus they trail on percentage.

However, for East Fremantle to drop out of the finals, they would need to lose both of their remaining games - to Swan Districts and Subiaco.

Plus, the Tigers would need to win both of their remaining games - to West Perth and top side, East Perth.

If they were able to scrape into the finals, they would be a good chance of making it to at least a preliminary final. Third placed Swan Districts have lost five of their past seven games, including their past three. Two of those losses were to Claremont.
