YMCA Manning Aquatic Leisure Centre in Taree is hosting the challenge for the first time and is calling on the Manning Valley community to sign-up for the challenge that will begin on Friday, August 29.
Curtis Landers is a 15-year-old boy who suffered a devastating injury to the C2 and C3 vertebrae during a rugby league match in Port Macquarie on May 24.
Jared Wynter, also known as Smiley, has stage four soft tissue sarcoma which affects his brain and lungs.
Funds raised for Curtis and Jared assist with their treatment.
YMCA Manning Aquatic Leisure Centre manager Melissa Morgan says the aim is to "promote healthier lifestyles, prevent illness and better manage chronic diseases in the Manning and Great Lakes areas."
She says the "community challenge focuses on weight control, camaraderie and charity."
"Goals are the best way to stay focused on your path ... that's where the Biggest Winner Ultimate Thinner 12-week challenge comes in," Melissa explained.
"Having a set timeframe to achieve your goal, combined with teammates as a support crew will motivate you to continually strive towards your end result.
"This technique is guaranteed to leave you leaner, stronger and healthier than when you started."
Melissa says the challenge has two divisions - the 'Fit Four Division' for teams of four people and the 'Fit Two Division' for teams of two people.
"During the competition, teams compete to lose the highest percentage of weight, not the highest amount of weight," Melissa explained.
"At the end of the 12-week challenge cash prizes will be paid to the top teams and individuals."
Last year Fitness2428 hosted a Biggest Winner Ultimate Thinner Challenge and more than $10,000 was awarded in cash in prizes.
According to Melissa, the challenge is open to anyone who wants to lose weight and people aged under 18 years can participate with the permission of their parents.
"Any business, organisation, sporting group or individuals can form a team," Melissa explained.
Membership of YMCA Manning Aquatic Centre is not a requirement of participating in the challenge, however the centre is offering free 14-day trial memberships to participants and will host nutrition seminars and provide training options during the challenge.
The cost of participation per team member is $80 with the first weigh-in scheduled at the launch on Friday, August 29.
The application form and guidelines are available from the centre or can be requested by email to manning@ymca.org.au
