Chatham trailed until the last minutes of the game when Trae Clarke kicked and regathered before passing to five-eighth Shaun Ridgeway who scored the match winner.
Sheather and Clarke were outstanding for Chatham while Shaq Goolagong made some powerful charges.
Clarke was playing his third game in four days, having played first grade for Taree City in the Group Three minor semi-final on Saturday and for Taree City’s under 18s in the major semi-final on Sunday.
The win represents Chatham’s best performance in the University Shield since 1984 when the school was eliminated in the semi-finals.
Chatham were back-to-back winners of the shield in 1980/81 and finalists in 1982.
Chatham’s opponent and venue for the semi-final has yet to be released.
Craig Mitchell is the team’s coach with the assistance of Scott Jacklin.
