Makayla's brother Kye will also be competing as a member of the Australian side.

She isn't representing her country, but qualified to take part in the championships in trials held at Liverpool last month.

Makayla is the Manning River Times-Iguana Sportstar of the Week, earning a $50 open order at Iguana.

She topped 590 points for tricks and 3.2 for slalom to gain a place in the world title field. Juniors is for skiers 16 and under. Makayla is only 12 and has only been involved in this type of barefoot skiing for about 18 months.

The championships will be a knockout and Makayla isn't holding out too much hope of progressing deep into the event.

"I'll probably get knocked out in the second round if I get that far,'' she said.

However, she enjoys this type of competition, saying it is 'more interesting' than barefoot drags.

Her elder brother practices just about every morning most months a year, as well as fitting in other sessions through the week.

Makayla concedes she's not nearly as dedicated.

"I've only been out in the morning once,'' she admits.

However, she was runner up overall in the junior girls' division at the Australian championship held at Darwin last year, in what was only her third competition, and she is coached by Greg Adams from Newcastle, while she also gets a few tips from Kye.

Makayla leads a busy sporting life. She mixes skiing, which she started when she was about five, with touch football, cheer leading and hockey.

She's represented the Hunter PSSA in hockey where she's a centre forward. Makayla plays with Tigers in the Manning junior competition and this season she hopes to have a run in division three as well.

She's also a cheer leader and was in the Taree PCYC squad that qualified for the Australian championships held in Melbourne last year.

The junior world barefoot championships are held every two years.

With a bit more experience Makayla hopes to be in the Australia side when the next one rolls around in 2016.
