Bob Smith BM and his local fishing crew of Mick Moseley, Darryl Collison and Stan Harris, visiting from Scone, have been busy catching and tagging the 26 legal size fish (flathead) for the annual $10,000 family fishing fun event.
This takes place throughout the entire month of January commencing on the very popular John Gollan Day and ending on January 31, as part of the Harrington festival activities, organised by the Harrington and Crowdy Head Chamber of Commerce.
This festival is part of the Manning Summer festival and John Gollan day ends with a magnificent fireworks display where a gold coin donation would be sought to help out with the costs.
Each fish is sponsored by a Lower Manning business and has a yellow numbered plastic tag attached.
Seven of the prize tags range from $1,000 to $500 and the other 19 then range down to $60.
Fish have been released in two spots at Manning Point, three spots at Harrington Backwater and along the main river and the other release at the boat ramp in Coopernook in front of the Coopernook Hotel (which is a sponsor).
The super fish is now worth $1,000 and is sponsored by Amalgamated Pest Control of Taree.
Bob said that brochures with all details of who the sponsors are and instructions, are available at local businesses throughout the lower Manning and the Tourist information Centre.
To claim a prize all the lucky angler has to do is catch one of the tagged fish within the month timeframe and take the tag (and the fish if possible) down to the Harrington Hotel and compare the number up on the board, which is displayed behind the bar.
If we can we would appreciate getting a photo with that tag sponsor presenting the prize.
There have been some lucky winners in the past so this January should see families out in force again fishing for the big one.
