Police activated their lights and sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle, however it allegedly sped away, crossing onto the wrong side of the road.
Due to safety concerns, police terminated the pursuit.
A short time later the vehicle lost control and left the road, colliding with a large sign.
A number of occupants ran from the scene, however, a 13-year-old boy suffered serious back injuries during the crash. He was treated by Ambulance Paramedics and then taken to John Hunter Hospital.
A Critical Incident Team from the Mid North Coast Local Area Command will now investigate all the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions of police.
That investigation will be overseen by the Professional Standards Command.
