Kate Rankin was the first to face the starter alongside competitors from St Josephs Port Macquarie and Lake Macquarie in the women's D grade single scull.
After a tentative start in slightly choppy conditions Rankin was able to be in touch with the opposition in the first half of the 400 metre course. In the back half of the race Rankin was able to draw away from the other scullers to claim a win and set the standard for other crews to follow.
Joey Jeffrey was the next of Manning River sculler to taste success in the men's C-grade single scull. Jeffrey, competing in a newly acquired single scull felt comfortable straight away and had little trouble with the Lake Macquarie sculler, defeating him by five seconds.
The women's D-grade quad scull comprising of Azura Barberie, Kate Rankin, Chloe Cross and India Boss had coach Graham Nix smiling. Not only did the crew win by some three seconds, the crew were able to maintain a controlled slide and good timing to finish ahead off the opposition..
In the men's C-grade quad scull Warren Steedman, Phil Walters, Joey Jeffrey and Sam Steedman faced crews from Newcastle and Uni of NSW.
Newcastle, with home course advantage, took a small lead at the first 100 metres, however with less than one metre separating the three crews for the full length of the race it was always going to be a close contest. With Jeffrey keeping a close eye on the opposition the Manning crew was able to put their bow in front, and led by Sam Steedman maintained plenty of drive to cross the line ahead of Uni of NSW
Manning River dominated the men's Masters single scull with John Corbett, Roy Halliday, Ray Beeton cruising over the line in the B, C, and E final respectively. A vastly different different race plan and effort was required for Graham Nix to add to his medal collection, being pushed right to the end by David Baker from Newcastle
With a large field entered in the men's and women's under 16 single scull heats, semi-finals were required to establish contenders for gold medal. Kate Rankin grew with confidence in each race in the single scull, with a win in heat four over Claudia Smith from Lake Macquarie, before accounting for Stacey Coombes from St Josephs Port Macquarie in the semi-final. The final went to Emma Wallace from Lake Macquarie in a close contest.
Tom Steedman progressed to the final with comfortable victories in the heat and semi finals of the men's under 16 single scull and came up against Bryce Gardner from St Joseph's Port Macquarie.
A close contest for the full distance was only decided on the line with Gardner getting the gold by 0.59 seconds.
