The mall was evacuated while the damage was being assessed and the clean-up began.
Police and emergency workers are currently on site.
It is believed the roof collapsed near Coles and Eddie's Fresh Chickens. Editor Toni Bell who was in the mall at the time, said shoppers were watching the storm from inside the shopping complex when two bangs were heard and the emergency evacuation siren sounded. At that stage the hail had stopped but it was raining heavily.
Police were also assisting at Taree Central shopping centre where it is believed the roof had leaked.
The storm hit shortly before 4pm accompanied by strong winds and hail.
Mick McDonald reports that Struggle Street was a winter wonderland, covered in hail, as was the area around Manning Hospital.
