The occasion was the opening of the $7million Manning Aquatic Leisure Centre.
A crowd estimated at more than 5000 packed into the centre. As entry was free it was explained that it was impossible to know the exact figure.
The indoor pool was the focal point, with thousands testing it for the first time.
However, as far as official openings go, it wasn’t up there with the Olympics, the Times noted in a four page spread on Tuesday August 22.
“Council’s general manager Greg Trevaskis initially had problems with the PA. And while the speakers spoke, the kids swam. Really, no-one cared,’’ Mick McDonald reported.
“That’s what it’s all about,’’ architect Peter Hunt agreed.
“Kids enjoying the facility - that’s what it was designed to do.’’
Mayor, Mick Tuck, praised the courage and foresight of the previous and current councils in making the decision to go ahead with the centre.
“We wanted to make it the best facility possible and we’ve done that,’’ he added, proudly.
Cr Tuck with Ray Stack and Fifi Phegan, who both contributed significant amounts towards the building of the facility along with Hazel Ragan, who single handedly raised thousands of dollars through selling raffle tickets, unveiled the plaque at the opening.
Tony Bradley, the inaugural president of the fund raising committee, travelled from Coffs Harbour for the occasion. John Bulmer, who took over as president, was also there.
The committee raised $650,000 in four years to help make the dream a reality.
Scott Calvin covered the day pictorially for the Times.
