THE search has begun in earnest for young women to enter the 2013 The Land Taree Showgirl Contest.
Taree Show Society secretary/treasurer Edithe Cheers is looking for women aged between 18 years and 25 years to vie for the right to represent the region.
The Taree Showgirl competition has traditionally been an integral part of the annual event and Mrs Cheers was keen to see it continue.
The competition has evolved to seek women from a broad cross-section of the local community and not just from families involved in the rural community of the Manning Valley.
"We are keen to meet young women who have a good general knowledge of our local area, state and national issues and involved in our community," Mrs Cheers explained.
"Contestants will be judged on their general knowledge, deportment and confidence with the winner given the opportunity to compete at zone finals and then possibly at the Sydney Royal Easter Show."
2012 Miss Taree Showgirl Clare Swan is currently overseas and could not be contacted to discuss her experience of being a showgirl, but according to a colleague at Great Lakes Shire Council, "she just loved the experience."
Mrs Cheers said this year's Taree Showgirl would win $300 and the runner-up $200. For further information please call Mrs Cheers on 6551 3245.
