OLD Bar hosted its first Group Three Rugby League semi-final last weekend but it won't be the last.
Group officials were delighted with the success of the day. In fact, Group Three secretary Barrie Smith hinted there may be a possibility of a grand final being played at Old Bar. Old Bar won the match 36-28.
"At this stage I don't think the 2013 grand final will be at Old Bar,'' Mr Smith said.
"But it's certainly something we'd consider in the future. The gate for the preliminary semi-final was $5570. Group Three treasurer Harry Rider said the average for the preliminary semi is around $4000.
"I know Harry was getting worried earlier in the day, but the nature of crowds these days is that people come and go, they don't stay around for the full program,'' Mr Smith said.
"And Old Bar also had sides involved in junior league semi-finals at Port Macquarie. A lot of people got there late. We were very happy with the gate.''
The field-proper was in perfect order for the match while there were no problems with parking.
Mr Smith said there are some concerns with the change room for the referees.
"The one that's there is just too small,'' he said.
"You couldn't even fit three chairs in there.''
To rectify this the group used a storage shed as a makeshift dressing room. However, this was situated right next to the away team's shed and Mr Smith admits this is far from perfect.
"There are a couple of things we'd need to look at and for that reason I don't think we'd play a grand final there this year, although that's only my opinion,'' he said.
Should Old Bar beat Wauchope in Sunday's major semi-final the club has opted to play the grand final at Wingham on Sunday September 15.
The news was even better for the group with Sunday's gate for the all Port Macquarie elimination semi-final. This tallied $6130. It was the first time the two clubs have met in a Group Three semi-final after Port Sharks returned to the competition this year.
"I checked it again on Sunday night just to be sure I didn't make a blue,'' Mr Rider said.
"Since 2002 the average gate for a preliminary semi-final is $3700, so we've made a good start this year.''
Semi-final action heads to Tuncurry on Saturday and Wauchope on Sunday. Forster-Tuncurry plays Port City on Saturday with Wauchope tackling Old Bar on Sunday.
