IT'S time for people in the Manning Valley to get physical and put their health first.
The Biggest Winner, Ultimate Thinner weight loss challenge is on again and businesses, organisations, sporting groups and individuals are being urged to get together a team of four and join other community members in a journey towards better health and fitness.
Last year more than 20 Taree teams signed up, and over the 12-week period about 1.5tonne of weight was lost.
Jayne Black from LJ Hooker Taree (co-ordinating the Taree end of the challenge, organised overall by Fitness 2428 in Forster), is hoping to see 30 teams sign up this year.
She's pleased that in her own office, they have lined up three teams already.
The challenge kicks off next Friday, August 30, with a launch event at LJ Hooker Taree starting at 6pm, which includes the all-important first weigh-in.
Over 12 weeks teams of four people compete to lose the highest percentage of weight - not necessarily the most weight.
As well as promoting a healthier lifestyle, the challenge is also a chance to support charity organisations.
This year $10 from every entry fee will go into the charity prize pool.
The top three teams from the Manning and Great Lakes will be given prize money that they can give to the charity of their choice.
"There's more of a charity focus this year," said Jayne, who also hopes to secure a business to sponsor every kilo lost, with a proportion of that money going towards the Max FM Christmas Train.
The aim of the competition is to promote better lifestyles in the Manning area with a challenge that focuses on weight control and camaraderie.
"If health is a goal for you and you need to lose a couple of kilos, this could be the motivator to keep you on track," said Jayne.
It's not all about weight loss though, but improving health, and dieticians will be giving nutrition seminars for participants.
With the launch only a week away, teams need to register as soon as possible.
All four team members should attend the challenge launch for the initial weigh-in (but if you can't make it alternate arrangements can be made).
Weigh-ins take place each Friday at the LJ Hooker auction room between 8am and 9am or 5pm and 6pm.
Participants will receive a support booklet with all the information needed for the 12-week challenge.
Entry for each participant is $80, to be paid prior to, or at, the launch. As part of the charity fundraising, small fines apply to those who miss weigh-ins or gain weight.
The main goal is to give people the opportunity to achieve their weight loss goals in a fun and challenging way.
