Police have charged a teenager over the alleged assault of an off-duty police officer near Taree at the weekend.
The off-duty officer from Manning Great Lakes Local Area Command learnt about property being damaged about 7.55pm Sunday.
When he arrived at the property on Hartlyn Drive at Wallabi Point he found a 14-year-old youth allegedly spraying graffiti .
Police will allege the teen struck the officer to the top of the head with the spray can, causing a deep cut to his head.
The officer restrained the teen until more police arrived.
The youth was later charged with damage property with graffiti, assault police officer causing actual bodily harm and possess prohibited drug (cannabis).
He was granted conditional bail to appear before Taree Children’s Court on September 17, 2013.
The officer was taken to Manning Base Hospital and treated for the cut before being discharged.
