OLD Bar coach Jason Morrissey hopes to use prop Michael Spence in 10 minute bursts when he plays his first game for the year on Saturday in the Group Three Rugby League clash against Wingham at Wingham.
As reported on Wednesday, Spence will be available for Old Bar's semi-final campaign starting next weekend at Old Bar. He'll play from the bench tomorrow.
However, he hasn't played at all this year and will be travelling from Brisbane for matches.
"I'd like to use him in 10 minute bursts. But last week Kyle Cochrane had his first game for a month and he was struggling to get 10 minutes - it's a bit harder for front rowers,'' Morrissey said.
Spence last played in 2012 for Coffs Harbour in the Group Two competition.
"He's been doing a bit of boxing for fitness, but we'll see how he goes this weekend,'' Morrissey said.
However, Morrissey is convinced Spence can play a dominant role in the semi-finals despite his limited match fitness.
He's hoping the Pirates can complete commitments for the season-proper with a win over the Tigers that will ensure second place.
This will mean the preliminary semi-final will be against Forster-Tuncurry at Old Bar next Saturday. Getting through the 80 minutes injury-free is another priority.
Morrissey may give under 18 representative player Josh Wood a taste of first grade football tomorrow.
"Jamie Hartland's got a bit of an injury so I might call Josh in on the wing,'' he said.
