Taree High's film crew address this topic in their 10 minute film, Sport Is Awesome, launched today at Taree High.
In an upbeat and positive way, the film presents the view that, as well as being good for mind and body, getting involved in sport and physical activity is a great way of making friends in the wider community.
Interspersed with sport shots and light-hearted cutaways, the film includes enlightening interviews with local GP Simon Holliday, exercise physiologist Warwick Maloney, counsellor Marilyn Crozier, sports journalist Mick McDonald, and sports photographer Carl Muxlow, as well as vox pop grabs from members of the general public on the streets of Taree.
Their message is the same: There is a direct link between depression and lack of exercise.
Taree High film crew have been producing their film every Wednesday for the past nine weeks.
Melbourne band Masketta Fall have generously provided their recently released song "Something Beautiful" for the soundtrack.
In a creative partnership between Forster Films and Taree High, Sport Is Awesome is available as an online educational resource to other NSW schools.
The launch, to be held this morning at the Taree High School library, will be opened by principal Allison Alliston and counsellor Therese Sullivan, and the film introduced by the film crew, made up of students from years seven to 12.
