A record 44 teams from throughout the area played in the tournament at Taree Recreation Centre this week, where NRL development officer Kylie Hilder said the emphasis was on fun.
“It’s always been non-competitive, but this year we didn’t even keep scores,’’ she said.
Three Newcastle Knights - Will Smith, Peter Mata’utia and Joseph Leilua attended and spent a busy day signing autographs.
The Knights have been locked in to send players to the sevens again next year.
Hilder said a number of players were having their first experience at rugby league and she received a few inquiries about joining a junior rugby league club.
“I’ll look at playing a bit earlier next year to work in with clubs’ registration days,’’ she said.
“It’ll definitely be played before the season starts.’’
