Old Bar will have the personnel to mount a strong premiership defence if the rugby union trial game against Medowie at Taree Rugby Park is any guide.
The Southern Shield champions won 26-0 after leading 21-0 at halftime.
Old Bar CEO Richard Crook said Medowie appeared down on strength, but even so, the Clams showed patches of good rugby, particularly in the opening 40 minutes.
Youngster Mark Drury’s performance at five-eighth was a revelation. Drury played fullback last season but was given a run at 10 and he could be the answer to a position that is a potential problem for the Clams this season. Last year’s pivot, Riley Hawkins, is now working outside the area and will only be available spasmodically.
Teia Ambrosoli was powerful at hooker while breakaway Chad Lambert turned in his usual busy display. Adam Gregory was strong in defence while newcomer Brenton Males showed promise in the centres. Jake Beckett also had his moments in the outside backs.
“They were pretty ruthless in the first two quarters,’’ Crook said.
“But it was hot and they fell away in the last two, but that’s probably understandable. It was a good trial.’’
The Clams will have a week off before heading to Kempsey to take on the Cannonballs in the annual challenge game on March 20. On March 27 the Clams will play in the Southern Shield gala at Harrington with the opening round of the season-proper on April 10.
