Long wait ends for veteran Saltwater surfer

Veteran surfer Michael Barberie ended a 12 year drought when he was named Saltwater Boardriders Club’s champion for 2008.

Barberie had double cause to celebrate as he was also named the masters champion. He has been runner up up on four occasions since his last club championship win in 1996 but consistent surfing during this year saw him claim his second title.

The club runs monthly contests from February to October. Currently membership stands at 85 ranging in age from 10 to around 50.

World Tour surfer Ben Dunn was the special guest at the club’s presentation held at the Old Bar Tennis Club. Award winners for the year are:-

Grommets: Matt Wynter

Cadets: Ben Wynter/Ryan Hunt 1, Ben Green 2, Todd Bourke 3.

Juniors: Harry Bell 1, Riley Nicholson 2, Oscar Scanes 3.

Opens: Nick Brunton 1, Billy Crellin 2, James Crook 3.

Girls: Sarah Evans 1, Emily Crook 2, Emma Aldous 3, Kimberley Sommerville 3.

Seniors: Paul McLennan

Masters: Michael Barberie

Most improved: James Sommerville

Club champion: Michael Barberie.

The club’s new season will start next February.
