Women land pennants

03 Jul, 2009 01:00 AM
THE women of the Harrington Waters division two pennants team have won the district pennants golf.

The team of Pam Sadler, Joan Fleming, Esther Bradley, Nancy Freer, Caryl Jennens and Pam Rigg were able to compete in the Central North Coast District Pennants competition.

The district in the south takes in Camden Haven, Foster Tuncurry, Port Macquarie, Tallwoods, Taree, Wauchope, Wingham, and Harrington Waters golf clubs, and the pennants is a matchplay competition, played over a couple of months

The rain made competition very difficult and although seven rounds were planned, only six could be played with a number of those matches having to be rescheduled.

The results were then decided on a countback from Taree club who were on equal points with Harrington Waters, the title going to Harrington Waters based on 20 games and Taree with 16 ½ games.

The Harrington Waters division three team, consisting of Wendy Booker, Fay Hay, Marion Cardinal, Marion Borron, Brenda Yeo and Heather Hole, also had success.

This was the first time the club has entered a division three team and as most of the team had never played matchplay before, club pro Craig Stayman spent some time explaining to the women how to play.

Local butcher Peter Walz from Harrington Butchery promised to put on a barbecue for the women if they managed to not come last in the competition. Out of the eight clubs the women came in a creditable third in the competition.

True to his promise Peter provided the meat for a barbecue for the women at the club house on Wednesday. Not only did he do it for the team - but for all the women.
