Two outright winners

03 Nov, 2009 07:12 AM
WINGHAM and Cundletown confirmed they are the two sides to beat for honours in this season's Manning A-grade cricket competition, when both secured outright wins.

Cundletown proved too strong for Forster in the match at the Johnny Martin Oval while Wingham overpowered Taree West at Cedar Party Reserve.

These sides now lead the premiership and would appear to be a class above the other three outfits.

David Rees was outstanding for Wingham as they completed the demolition job on Taree West.

Taree West resumed day two of the encounter trailing Wingham by 113 runs with only two wickets in hand to gain first innings points.

Brad Mitchell added four runs to his total before David Rees bowled the number seven bat for an innings top score of 28.

Rees soon after had Gary Pomplun caught at second slip by Brad Schubert for six, leaving West all out for 75 trailing Wingham by 107.

David Rees finished the first innings with figures of 8/20 from 8.5 overs.

Wayne Smoothy quickly enforced the follow on, sending West back in for their second innings.

Craig Kerwin and Jeremy Dack made 14 for the first wicket before Russell Laing had Kerwin (7) caught behind by Ben Cole.

With the score on 26, Trevor Bailey had Jordan Lee caught and bowled for 4, but this brought Nick Walker to the crease and he and Dack started push the visitors score along to 54 until Bailey struck again trapping Walker in front for 22.

The wickets then started to flow for Wingham with Rees dismissing Mitchell for four and Jamie Hartland had Lee Crozier adjudged LBW for 10.

Hartland was in sparking form. The young quick bowled Peter Crossman for a duck and then trapped Justin Boyd in front the very next ball.

One run later Hartland claimed is fourth wicket of the innings when he once again got an LBW decision, this time against opening bat Jeremy Dack (27).

Nathan Fuller (4) was bowled by Bailey still needing another 23 runs to pass the Wingham first innings total.

Pomplun and Brian Levi frustrated the Wingham bowlers and in the 45th over Taree West moved the total to 108, thus requiring Wingham to bat again only then to have Russell Laing have Pomplun caught by Michael Rees for 18 leaving Levi not out 7 and Wingham a total of three to chase for victory.

Jamie Hartland 4/11, Trevor Bailey 3/26, Russell Laing 2/11 and David Rees 1/37 were the wicket takers for Wingham

The game was over in a flash when Tim Rees smashed the first delivery of the Wingham second innings to the boundary handing Wingham a 10 wicket outright victory.

Wingham now plays Forster at Cedar Party Reserve, with Taree Leagues playing Taree West at Johnny Martin Oval.

Meanwhile rumours continue that Cundletown, and district representative Corey Shields, will be making a switch to defending premiers Wingham.

Wingham secretary, Steve Campbell has confirmed that Shields has spoken to members of the club about a possible transfer but this stage of going to press however, there has been no official request from the Wingham club for his services.

A spokesman for Cundletown yesterday said that Shields won't be playing for the club again this year.
