FOR a while it looked as though Killawarra siblings Aaron and Brooke Anderson might dominate the junior camp draft at the Australian Bareback Rodeo Association (ABRA) finals held at Tamworth.
Aaron, 13 and Brooke, 10, both made the cut of 25 for the three round finals. Points are gained at sanctioned events held throughout the State.
Aaron turned 13 in July which elevated him into the juvenile section (13 to 17 years). He competed the first half of the year as a junior (eight to 13) and accumulated enough points to qualify for both divisions, although under the rules he could only contest one at the nationals. He chose the juniors.
After the first round Brooke was the overall leader at Tamworth with Aaron in third place. However, Brooke had a bit of bad luck in the subsequent rounds and dropped out of contention. Aaron maintained his consistency to finish fifth and third in the remaining two rounds to win the event overall. He also won the aggregate.
This was the second year that Aaron has contested the finals, while Brooke was making her debut. Both are now looking forward to the new season where Aaron will be in the juvenile section for the entire campaign. While he understands this will probably result in tougher competition against more seasoned riders, he's determined to compete at Tamworth again next year. Brooke wants to push harder for overall honours in 2011, confident she has gained from this year's experiences.
