Moon targets world titles

21 Nov, 2008 07:54 AM
WINGHAM Rifle Club's Wendy Moon has been named in an Australian team to take on New Zealand in a series in New Zealand in January.

This marks the 46-year-old's return to the international scene. And she hopes it will be another step to gaining selection in the Australian squad for the world championships to be held in Brisbane in 2011. Fellow WRC club member Steve Southwell is also in the team to go to New Zealand.

Moon has shot for the Australian women's side in the past and also in New Zealand.

"This will be my first time in about 10 years, though,'' she said.

"I had a break while I was having kids and moving around the country.''

However Moon has been named in the Australian open team for the first time.

"This was once known as the Australian men's side because there weren't that many women shooting,'' she explained.

That's far from the case now and Moon said she's looking forward to her debut at this level. The reigning Wingham Rifle Club champion is far from fazed at the prospect of shooting against the men.

"I live with one,'' she laughed.

"It doesn't bother me at all.''

Moon's husband, Tony, is also one of the crack shots at the Wingham club.

While Moon is naturally happy at the prospect of returning to international competition, she admits her aim is making the Australian side for the world championships.

"We've been told that New Zealand won't have any impact on selection for the world championships, but I know the selectors will be watching,'' she said.

Moon conceded that her form wasn't great in trials for the world championship team held recently in Brisbane.

There were some extenuating circumstances the selectors are aware of and she hopes they'll take these into account when settling on the squad.

"I think I'm a 50/50 chance,'' she said.

While the world titles aren't until 2011, Moon explained that selectors want to get the squad together as many times as possible beforehand to ensure an adequate preparation.

"Australia's a big place so it is hard to get everyone together at the one time,'' she noted.

Moon's enjoying the sport as much as ever.

"That's the great thing about rifle shooting - when you're too old to play other sports, you can still shoot,'' she said.
