MANNING Rowing Club’s Masters competitors were the toast of the Manning River at the Summer Festival Regatta with wins in both male and female events in front of a large crowd.
The team of Col Broos, Richard Reddel, Roy Halliday and John Corbett lived up to expectations in the men’s Masters quad scull, seeing off a fast finishing Lake Macquarie to claim the Manning River club’s first win for the weekend.
The team matched the opposition off the start line for the first 250 metres before taking a half length lead with a push at the 500 metres. Here they built a two length lead and were never headed. The women matched the men in the Masters fours with the team of Kaye Pullen, Narelle Drake, Mandy Cavill, Nicole Pullen and coxswain Paulette Baker taking an early lead in the race to go on to take an empathic win by a length of nearly 80 metres.
Mandy Cavill and Nicole Pullen also combined for victory in the women’s Masters double scull.
The results continued in the individual events with Richard Reddel taking out the Men’s C-grade singles and quad scull teammate Col Broos first across the line in the D-grade singles.
Monique Rennei took out the women’s C and D-grade double.
Sydney Rowing club was well represented taking out the bulk of the events, though not without some local input with Tony and Ray Beeton combining with Sydney Rowing club for a victory in the fours and former Taree sculler Tess Gerrand claiming a relatively easy victory for the Sydney club in the women’s A-grade singles.
Manning River Rowing Club stalwart John Cross was also in the crowd to witness the efforts of grandson Ben Cross and granddaughter Chloe Cross competing for the first time.
Ben combined with Tom Steedman to take on seasoned campaigners in the men’s D-grade double scull while Chloe combined with India Bos for a second place finish in the women’s D- grade double scull. Both crews gained valuable experience for the Berry Park regatta.
