MELBOURNE Cup-winning jockey Corey Brown will not be at this Sunday's Wingham Cup race meeting but the Taree-Wingham Race Club is confident the gun hoop will be in town early next year.
Brown, a former Wingham boy, planned to visit the Bushland Drive Racecourse on Sunday as a special guest of the club but has been called to ride in Perth tomorrow, meaning he won't be back on the east coast in time for cup day.
Vice president Greg Coleman said the club is keen to honour Brown's achievements at this year's Flemington spring racing carnival - where he won three of the four major races, including his memorable victory in the Melbourne Cup - and the opportunity may arise in January.
Coleman said Brown is likely to be available to attend the Old Bar Cup meeting, to be held at the Taree track on Tuesday, January 5.
He said this would be a good opportunity to give Brown a fitting reception as it was a well-attended meeting with many visitors in town for the holiday season .
The Tuesday should also suit Brown as he is unlikely to be committed to riding elsewhere.
The club had considered its Christmas meeting on December 20 as the next chance to honour Brown but the jockey will be attending the wedding of fellow Sydney hoop Hugh Bowman on that day.
Coleman said Brown is eager to come along to a local meeting and was looking forward to being trackside for his hometown cup but was required to continue his association with the David Hayes trained All American in the $1million Railway Stakes at Ascot.
All American was one of his three major winners at Flemington when he impressively won the $1million Emirates Stakes, along with Shocking in the $5.5million Melbourne Cup and Monaco Consul in the $1.5million Victoria Derby.
Punters cashed up from following Brown at Flemington can add to their winnings tomorrow, the hoop giving All American a great chance after being most impressed with his winning effort at Flemington.
