Great start by rookie Taree rowing crew

07 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
MANNING River Rowing Club members ventured to Berry Park to compete in the Endeavour Rowing Club regatta.

Luke Spicer and Harry Wallis joined the racing ranks for the first time in the men's under 16 double scull and finished in second place.

They then combined with Tom Steedman and Zac Calvin in the men's under 16 quad scull.

Up against crews from Hunter Valley Grammar School and Newcastle Grammar School the crews were dicing for first place for the full 1000 metre distance with less than a boat length separating the three crews.

Manning was holding third place with 250 metres to travel but a very supportive crowd on hand inspired the boys to move into second place and try to reel in the leading crew.

Approaching the finish line the crew lost momentum through missed timing and were forced to settle for second place.

Men's masters crew of Graham Nix, Tony Beeton, Roy Halliday and John Corbett faced the starter along with crews from North Shore, Lake Macquarie, Brisbane Water and Newcastle.

Manning were trailing the North Shore crew by half a boat length with 200 metres to go and were cutting the lead with each stroke.

In the last 10 strokes Manning called an effort and with the immediate response moved past the crew from the city to claim the first victory for the club.

Graham Nix had more success combining with Ray Beeton in the men's masters' double scull, while John Corbett accounted for club mate Col Broos in the men's C grade single scull.

Broos and Roy Halliday took out their division of men's masters single.

Rebecca Deer finished a close second in the women's D grade single scull and then went one better with sister Amy Deer winning the women's D-grade double scull by more than six lengths.

Monique Rennie was another to collect a medal winning both under 17 and women's C grade single sculls
