Forwards the key for the Clams

03 Jul, 2009 01:00 AM
GETTING the most out of their forward pack will be the focus of the Old Bar Clams when they take on traditional rivals Manning River Ratz at Old Bar Reserve tomorrow.

Coach Darren Drury was pleased with this week's training runs where the emphasis was on keeping a tight pack in order to dominate from the front.

"We've got a big forward pack but they're not as effective as they should be," Drury said.

"We've been working on that so we'll see if we get the results."

Drury acknowledged the traditional rivalry in place between the two sides meant all players would be keen for a big game so wasn't expecting any significant advantage from the home ground.

"They're always close encounters so I'd expect no different this week," Drury said.

Drury was pleased with his side's depth at present and will tinker with the format tomorrow.

The major change will be bringing Brent Hodge in as inside centre.

"He will add a lot in attack and defence."

Tim Hoffmeir, who played the position last week, will move back to the wing.

He acknowledged the Ratz had been finding some form of late and improving as the competition progresses so expected the side to pose a challenge.

"It will be a tough battle but if we can dominate in the forwards we might be able to get away it," he said. "They've got some good backs to cover so we need to keep it tight up front and try to get on top that way."
