Fleet of 22 contests handicap event

04 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
TWENTY two boats contested the first handicap start of the new sailing season in a steady 10-knot nor east breeze.

First away were Firebolt (Mark Cross and Ben Wright), MidCoast Mowers (Cody and Jay Smith with Gavin Periera), Mikado (Warren Ruprecht), Shark Bait (Rob Curtis and Tracinta Bernasconi).

The next boats away were Liten Up (Nick Wright and Tom Wood), Radical Phase (Tony and Conor Smith), Gopher Baroque (Andrew Diesel and Olivia Freeman), B'ause (John and Judy Corbett) and Lost Cause (Ross Green and Sue Cini). As the low markers were starting MidCoast Mowers were approaching the top mark just ahead of Liten Up, Mikado and Radical Phase.

The pace at the bank end of the fleet was hot with Dark Side of the Moon (Robert Fish and Cassie Cause) chasing the fleet along with Don't Tell Mum (Adam Cause and Jeremy Dodds), Raptor (Robert and Hayden Baker and Adam Birkefeld), Browns Creek Ferry (Team Dillon) and That's Gold (Richard and Rebekah Dodds).

At the top mark the second time Radical Phase had taken the lead from Liten Up, Mikado and Shark Bait.

Lost Cause had also made good time on the second lap along with Final Phase (Greg Roach and Ben Ferguson) and Grinna (Josh Marks and Ian Wood).

The second run back to the club proved fruitful for the spinnaker boats who were enjoying the freshening breeze and by the end of the lap Grinna had hit the lead from Final Phase, Radical Phase and Lost Cause.

With the breeze now a steady 12 knots Grinna and Final Phase maintained their position to the finish. They were followed by Lost Cause, Raptor who along with that's Gold literally flew home. Nest was Shark Bait and Browns Creek ferry.

Fastest corrected time saw DSOM just ahead of Raptor with That's Gold just in front of Final Phase, Don't' Tell Mum and Browns Creek Ferry.

The first heat of the club championships will be sailed on Saturday with 25 boats expected to start this should make for some close sailing.
