 Final Phase sneaks win

Final Phase sneaks win

17 Nov, 2009 08:48 AM
SAILORS converged on Manning Point for the town's annual regatta and were greeted with fantastic weather for the entire weekend.

Joining the local fleet were seven visiting NS14s from Lake Macquarie and Sydney to contest the first two heats of the travellers trophy.

Saturday's first race was sailed in a 10 to 12 knot nor east breeze.

The NS14s had a separate start with 18 boats contesting the championships. Best away were Dark Side of The Moon (Robert Fish and Cassie Cause), That's Gold (Richard and Rebekah Dodds), Salty Lips (Scott Day of Teralba) Oracle (Steve Jones of Mamong Point), and Evolution (Guy Bellamy of Teralba).

These boats enjoyed some very close racing with DSOM having to pull out all stops to maintain the lead. Further back in the fleet Viper (Adam Cause and Jeremy Dodds) were dis-masted and were fortunate to salvage the rig.

With the breeze steadily building DSOM sailed away to win by a minute from Salty Lips and That's Gold.

In the mixed fleet Final Phase (Greg Roche and Ben Ferguson) took line honours from Grunt (Troy Lewis and Mick King) and Liten Up (Nick Wright and Ian Wood). MidCoast Mowers (Cody and Jay Smith and Gavin Periera) also suffered mast damage and were forced to retire.

Race two started around 3pm with a steady 15knot nor'easter and once again DSOM jumped away from the start with Salty Lips and That's Gold in close pursuit with Adam Cause stepping into his father John's boat Poppa Bear trying hard to join the three leaders. Further back saw Oracle, Evolution, Hooters (Garry Belamy of Teralba) and Saltwater (North Bridge Sailing Club) enjoying some great racing and relishing the fresh breeze.

But once again the fleet were chasing DSOM who were sailing a flawless race and went on to win by over three minutes from Salty Lips just ahead of That's Gold.

The mixed fleet also enjoyed the fresh breeze with Australian Champion MG Final Phase having some spectacular spinnaker rides and recording a good win from Grunt and Liten Up with Black Flag (Ryan and Craig Hunter) retiring with gear failure.

Race three on Sunday saw another great day but a disappointing 5-6 knot east south east breeze which was to make for some interesting sailing along with the big run out tide.

Salty Lips jumped away at the start from DSOM, Evolution and Bohica (G.Williams of Teralba) with the rest of the fleet closely bunched behind him. Conditions were frustrating as the boats rounded the top mark and tried to run downwind against the tide.

Experience came through with Salty Lips, DSOM and Evolution gaining a break from the pack and finishing in that order. Next were Bohica, That's Gold, and Hooters.

The mixed fleet also enjoyed some close racing with Predator (Len Mancell and Les Barlin) Final Phase and MidCoast Mowers marking the most of the spinnaker runs. Predator just held out Final Phase and MidCoast Mowers.

Race four was also sailed in light breeze.

Best at the start were Oracle, Salty Lips, DSOM and Poppa Bear. In a real cat and mouse type race Oracle and Salty Lips swapped the lead many times and even after Oracle clipped a rounding mark and had to complete a penalty turn they hung onto win from Salty Lips and DSOM.

In the mixed fleet MidCoast Mowers were having their best race so far and hit the lead on the spinnaker run, just ahead of Final Phase with Grunt third, however Cody couldn't keep the vee ess in front of Final Phase who eventually won.

Overall results saw DSOM win the NS14 Travellers trophy from Salty Lips and That's Gold.

Handicapper Terry Launders superimposed the local NS14 results with the mixed fleet results only to see a dead heat for first with Final Phase winning on a count back from Dark Side of the Moon.

Overall handicap winners were Liten Up from Don't Tell Mum (Tony and Aaron Nicolls). Great to see these boats leading the fleet on handicap.

Next week sailors will again sail at Manning Point for the first heat of the knockout.

Overall Regatta Results
