Buoyed by five returns

CLUB president Lee Hinton had a simple response when asked which Old Bar Pirates first grade player would be key to the side's chances in their Group Three rugby league encounter this weekend: "everyone."

The Pirates take on the Wingham Tigers at Wingham tomorrow (Saturday), a challenge not lost on the side.

"There's no particular player we'll be relying on," Hinton assured.

"We need a big game from everyone."

Hinton was quick to admit Wingham gave his side 'a fair touch up' at their last meeting with a margin in the vicinity of 50 points when the sides clashed at Old Bar.

Playing at the Wingham Sporting Complex this time about creates its own problems, with the Tigers always tough to beat at home, but Hinton was confident the previous scoreline would act as a motivator rather than a hindrance.

"It's going to be tough but the boys will be pretty fired up for a better result," he said.

The Pirates have every reason to have a spring in their step with a much strengthened line-up not far from the best they can assemble.

For a side that has been enduring recent injury hardships, tomorrow the Pirates will be buoyed by the return of Ryan Merrick, Steve Sansom and Mitch Brown, with Darrin Dark also returning off the bench.

Recent signing Zac Welsh from Wingham will also be having a run to add depth to the line-up.

Just two regular players remain on the sidelines, with Aaron Little out with an ankle problem and Nigel Lyons missing because of a hamstring.

Hinton believes the returning faces have helped lift the players' spirits, saying enthusiasm within the club is strong and this has been reflected on the training paddock this week.

Numbers at training have been high and the club presently has plenty of depth, so supporters will be hoping this will translate into points tomorrow.

The Pirates have just one win on the board this season and sit sixth on the competition table, one spot but six points behind the Tigers.

First grade kicks off tomorrow at 4pm.
