Brad's big bream win

04 Nov, 2009 08:28 AM
SEVENTEEN-year old angler Brad Worboys is on the lookout for a new boat.

He has a 40hp Mercury outboard to put on the craft after his win in the ABT Ford Ranger Bream grand final in Sydney.

"I'm keeping my eye out for a new boat,'' he said.

"The one I have now's too small.''

Brad won the grand final by just 20 grams. A non-boater, he said he was fortunate to draw two of Australia's best bream fishermen for both days of the competition. He was with Darren Borg on the first day and Chris Wright the second.

"I was lucky there,'' he admitted.

"They know where the fish are.''

Brad had never fished Sydney Harbour before and that was another reason he was lucky to have the experienced Queenslanders as company. He said he was fortunate to see plenty of the famous harbour during the two days, although he wasn't interested in sight seeing.

"We fished everywhere,'' he said.

He was second overnight but wasn't too confident about his chances of taking out the title.

"I was hoping for a top three,'' he said.

He was reasonably happy with his catch on the second day, which included his biggest fish - an 850gram specimen.

He admits there were some nervous moments at the weigh-in.

"There was always a chance someone would bring in a bigger bag,'' he said.

Brad's a newcomer to the high tech world of bream fishing competitions.

"I entered my first one at Taree in January,'' he explained.

He had instant success, finishing third which automatically qualified him for the grand final.

Brad later fished Port Macquarie and the Clarence River for experience. He was fourth at Port but missed out on the Clarence.

He's been finishing for the majority of his 17 years, starting in a tinnie with his pop, Don Hammond.

"I've got a couple of mates who are older than me and they were entering the competitions. So I asked dad and decided to go in the one at Taree,'' Brad said.

He'll be a definite starter in 2010, determined to defend his championship.
