LOCAL pugilist Darren Bedford will stepping between the ropes for the second time as a professional tonight at the University of New South Wales.
He will be fighting James Giltrow of Queensland in a state of origin contest.
"I'm really looking forward to this bout, I've been training really hard and now I can tell people I represented New South Wales in a state of origin," the former local rugby league player laughed.
Troy Glover, Bedford's trainer, was also meant to fight on the card but had to pull out due to injury concerns.
"He pulled a tendon in his arm and had to pull out but he's going to be there in my corner which will be an added bonus for me," Bedford said on the matter.
"Things have been going well for me. I've been sparring a lot with the amateur fighters and pad work Gary Brewer who's been helping out with training at the gym and I've also been travelling to do sparring with Australian ranked fighters, so I'm feeling good about this fight."
"We've got a good little set up going on here now, I've got two great trainers in Troy Glover and Gary Brewer and I have Tim Rogers wrapping my hands for the fight, they all do their job well so all I have to worry about is hitting the bloke," Darren said with a smile.
Giltrow has an imposing record as a fighter of 28 wins from 32 fights as an amateur and four wins from five as a professional, three of those wins coming inside the distance, but this doesn't faze Darren too much.
"He won his last fight by knock out but the bloke he beat has only won two out of 10 fights and had been knocked out in five of those. If he expects another easy win out of me he's in for a very rude shock."
This is Bedford's first time back in the ring since he's professional debut against Aaron Bartley, who had just missed out on a spot in the Australian Olympic side and was a regular sparing partner to world champion Billy Dib.
"Darren did really well against Bartley; he took the fight right to him and only lost on a split-decision" Punching Monkey head trainer Troy Glover said.
"Since that fight he has only got hungrier and now he knows what he's in for so we're all looking forward to it in the gym."
