NON-traditional, but not unusual, names were extremely popular with parents this year, according to baby notices published in the Manning River Times during 2008.
Of the 148 boys born, seven were given Riley as their first name.
While this name has generally been popular in previous years, it did not make the top five last year.
Actually the names that topped the boys list in 2007, Ryan and Lachlan, given six times each last year, did not even make the top 10 in 2008 (Ryan was given once and Lachlan/Lochlane given three times).
It was the same story for 2007’s most popular name Charlotte.
While given five times in 2007, it was only given twice in 2008.
First place for girls names in the past 12 months was a tie, with Mia (or Mya) and Lily (or Lilly) given five times each.
Madison (Maddison), Ella and Isabella tied for second, each given four times, with the next popular names being Imogen, Jessica and Chloe (or Kloe/Khloe) with three each.
Mia did not rate a mention in the top names in 2007 but according to metropolitan media it has become very popular this year after Bec and Lleyton Hewitt used the name for their first child.
Some different spellings of more common names made an appearance in this year’s notices including Kloe, Aleksandra, Jayde, Ayden, Coopah, Haimish, Lochlane, Nait and Tobie.
Some of the more unusual names given to girls this year include Bryella, Chanel, Charlea, Jaeda, Jaytarna, Kalani, Keala, Keeva, Kiyani, K-Sierra, Kyleah, Leara, Meiha, Nakyha, Nyoka, Oakley, Ryhia, Shontaya, Shaneika, Tahli, Tahzrae, Trikki, and Velvet.
Unusual boys names included Archer, Axel, Azjorn, Bodhi/Bohdy, Chase, Hudson, Indy, Jasim, Jarrah, Joash, Kalolo, Kenan, Lenox, Mackye, Raine-Jon, Rhyder, Rian, Taj, Talen and Tyreese.
Celebrity inspired names included Sienna, Miley, Rhianna, Ashton and Keanu.
