Strong women

TWENTY-three women have been recognised in the ‘Strong Women of the Manning – Wonderful Women’ booklet published by Greater Taree City Council.

The book was launched last week, to coincide with International Women’s day celebrations.

Here we meet the ‘wonderful women’ who make such as outstanding contribution to the Manning Valley.

Kim Barratt

A quiet achiever and an inspiration to those lives she’s touched, Kim is a selfless friend of those in need. She never hesitates when someone needs support, physical assistance or a loan.

Maire Barrett

Maire is involved with many community groups including Telecross and Taree Craft Cottage. But it is her work with Manning Valley University of the Third Age (U3A) she is recognised for, in particularly the Tai Chi classes she runs for seniors twice a week.

Mary Blackman

Nominated for raising her own children, including one with a disability who she still cares, Mary also became her grandson’s guardian. She has also given time to St Josephs Primary School, Manning Gardens Public School and Manning Respite Care.

Margery Bonsor

An active volunteer, Margery has been an organist at the Methodist and the Uniting Church and a scripture teacher. She has been the face of the Leprosy Mission, given time to be a pianist at Taree West Public School and was a stalwart of the ‘Walk Against Want’ event in Taree.

Petra Byrne

Petra is a volunteer with the Look Good…Feel Better program, which helps people deal with the physical side effects of cancer treatment. She has attended the oncology department for the past 11 years and was instrumental in establishing a wig library at Manning Hospital.

Heather Coombes

Heather is a kindergarten teacher at Cundletown Public School, where she nurtures children and helps with their self esteem and confident.

Margaret Ezzy

Margaret plays a role with special needs children as part of Camp Quality and at Old Bar preschool. She was the long-time director of Girrawong Preschool. She cooks for fundraising events including Mondrook Hall, Tinonee School and Old Bar preschool.

Cathy Fairleigh

Cathy played a role in establishing and operating a women’s health screening service since 2006, for women who would not otherwise access such a service.

Adrienne Greene

Adrienne has been manager of Manning Valley Neighbourhood Services and established the Taree Women’s Domestic Violence Court Assistance Scheme. She continues to work with victims of violence and was behind the ‘Reclaim the Night’ events. She contributes to 2BOB fundraisers and is secretary of the Cuddlepie Early Childhood Learning Centre.

Rene Harper

Rene has a career in nursing and contributed to the establishment of a medical unit at Purfleet, the foundation for the Biripi Medical Centre. She was also involved in the movement to establish the Manning District Emergency Accommodation, and now works for the volunteer group LINC (Love in the name of Christ).

Jennifer Hinton

While caring for her granddaughter full-time, she volunteers many hours in the canteen at Taree Christian Community School and caters for school community events and organises concerts. She also volunteers for The Salvation Army.

Jeanette Holland

Jeannette has made an outstanding contribution to the Manning including with the Anglican Church. Bushland Place Hostel Auxiliary, Manning Support Services, Manning Valley Festival of the Arts, Valley Industry Sheltered Workshop Committee, School Parents and Citizens Committees and the Quota Club of Taree.

Cate Jeffree

Cate has been recognised for her cultural vision of the Manning Valley, the establishment of vocal ensemble Kantabile and the co-direction of community concerts with Sinfonia and Company of Voices. She has been a musical inspiration to thousands of children in the Taree district for more than 30 years, teaching music in many schools.

Mary Joliffe

Mary is a modest person, a quiet achiever and a person who always puts her needs last. She works tirelessly in raising funds for the Hunter Melanoma Foundation.

Lynette Macinnis

Lynette has been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, an active member of girl guides and boy scouts, and involved in various organisations including Sheltered Workshop Ladies Auxiliary, Presbyterian Women’s Guild and Red Cross. She was an inaugural members of Bushland Place Ladies Auxiliary and is still there.

Janelle Muldoon

Twenty-three years ago Janelle and her husband started fostering and adopting children, particularly those with special needs. She took so many children to Tinonee Play Group over the years she was made a life member. She works at Manning Gardens Public School in the early intervention unit, and provides respite care for children with special needs.

Mary Poole

A passionate advocate for the Manning Valley, Mary has been at the forefront of activism to promote women’s rights and opportunities. She is a nurse and is concerned with women’s reproductive health, their independence and the right to be safe from violence and abuse. She has been on the manning Valley Domestic Violence Monitoring Committee and Manning Valley Women’s Association.

Sally Reed

With a keen interest in the future of the Manning Valley, she is well respected and applies good judgment in dealing with the needs of local businesses. She has been involved with the Business Women’s Association, Taree Chamber of Commerce Industry and Tourism and The Flair Awards.

Gwen Riley

Gwen spent years serving the community. She was involved in Meals on Wheels for and a volunteer at the Tea Rooms, which supports Manning Counselling Services. More recently she established the Taree Blue Cross Church. Gwen passed away in December last year.

Val Schaefer

As Manning Valley tourism manager, Val has made a significant contribution to tourism in the Manning. Her vision is for it to continue to develop as a vibrant regional centre of the mid north coast.

Marifel Schilpzand

Marifel has been involved in the multi-cultural affairs of Taree city and has served on various volunteer groups that aim to highlight the richness of multiculturalism, including an advisory committee to the Ethnic Affairs Commission.

Elizabeth Try

Elizabeth’s contribution to the Manning has been in the area of education and welfare. She has worked at TAFE; she set up infrastructure to support the first University Department of Rural health Program in Taree, and aims to address the rural health shortage by supporting university undergraduates in gaining experience in Taree. She is currently involved with the Many Rivers Diabetes Prevention Program.

Dusty Walkom

For many years Dusty has contributed to the cultural and visual arts sector of the Manning Valley. She has been a member of the Friends of the Manning Regional Art Gallery for 19 years, and along with her husband Dr Philip Walkom, sponsor the biennial Manning Art Prize.
