While not on the agenda for tonight’s meeting of Greater Taree City Council, it is believed highly likely that discussion will take place on the latest calls for a re-location of the Taree skate park.
Manning River District Cricket Association, Taree High School Student Representative Council and the family of cricket legend Johnny Martin have teamed up to press for a more suitable site for the skate park, located adjacent to Johnny Martin Oval at Taree Park (see stories MRT Fri-Sat Feb 26-27).
Their calls have come following the latest reported vandalism at the park, where the Johnny Martin Oval sign was ripped out and used as a skate ramp.
Mayor Paul Hogan expressed disgust at the actions of the vandals and the continuing littered state of the skate park, saying he would prefer to see the facility “better located”.
He suggested several sites including Taree PCYC off Commerce Street, the Taree Recreation Grounds at Chatham or the park in Whitbread Street adjacent to Taree Railway Station.
Council’s acting director engineering, Graham Schultz confirmed this week the skate park was not on the agenda for council’s meeting at 5pm today.
However it was possible that the matter might be brought forward as urgent business.
“It has certainly generated some thoughts about the issue,” Mr Schultz said.
